Grok 1.2.36 is the Android app of the generative AI chatbot from xAI. You type or speak a question and the chatbot answers in plain language, helping with explanations, writing and ideas; the app is free to download, and Grok is also available on the web at grok.com.
Grok is a chatbot built on a large language model, a type of artificial intelligence trained on huge amounts of text to predict and generate language. It was first announced in November 2023, and the underlying model has since gone through several generations, from Grok 1 in 2024 to Grok 4 in July 2025. In everyday use it behaves much like other AI assistants: you ask it to explain a topic, summarise a text, draft an email, suggest names for a project or think through a problem step by step. The answers can be impressively fluent, but fluency is not the same as accuracy. Like every language model, Grok can state wrong facts with confidence, so it works best as a starting point and a sparring partner rather than as a final authority.
More details are on the official pages grok.com and x.ai/grok.

Partly in history, not in the app. The weights of the early Grok-1 model were published in the xai-org/grok-1 repository under the Apache License 2.0, while the app and the current service are proprietary. Developers can follow changes to the paid API in the xAI release notes.
